My weekly Learning Goal

I do the right thing even when no-one is looking, helping others; because I can.

For me doing this is my favourite thing in the world. I like helping others because their smile just makes me happy. I really like helping other people because I know a small thing can make a persons day so this goal was really easy for me.

NYLD

On Friday I went to NYLD. NYLD is a big event where lots of schools meet up and get inspired by young leaders. The speakers for this year was Chris Jupp, Billy Graham, Valentine Tauamiti, Marina Alefosio, Emily Muli and Brylee Mills. 

For me my top three speakers would be Billy Graham, Valentine Tauamiti and Brylee Mills. I liked Billy because he may not have been good at something but he tried, he gave it a go. I liked Valentine because when he told his story he told it in a funny and inspiring way and I liked Emily because she never gave up even when things where tough.

For my vegetable goal my mum took it a bit to far so all I had in my lunch was fruit and veggies so i'm doing good on that.

For the sleeping and brain breaks I have been going great on that I have   been getting up early and going to bed early and I have been doing good on the brain breaks because I have up to 4-5 brain breaks a day.

So I give myself a big tick!

The unfounded fear that affects over twenty million people in the U.S., and many more worldwide, is so serious, that it is considered a medical disorder that goes by the names friggatriskaidekaphobia or paraskevidekatriaphobia?

People who suffer from this affliction experience symptoms that range from mild anxiety to a nagging fear that something bad is about to happen, to even full-blown panic attacks.

However, for many the fear began long before the hockey-masked villain of that tale, Jason Voorhees, made his appearance. So how did the day get its bad reputation? Some of the notoriety can probably be attributed to the release of the first “Friday the 13th” movie in 1980.

According to University of Delaware professor Thomas Fernsler, the reason people hate the number is because it follows the nicely rounded and ‘safe’ number 12.

According to one popular myth, twelve gods were enjoying a quiet dinner party in their mythological heaven, Valhalla, when a god named Loki (of the Thor movie fame), strolled in. The uninvited 13th guest caused havoc and even instigated Hoder, the blind god of darkness to kill Balder, the god of joy and gladness.

The one unfortunate event that is thought to have occurred on Friday the 13th is the slaying of Adam and Eve's son Abel, by his brother Cain. Though the date was not the 13th, it was right after the Last Supper, whose 13 guests included Judas Iscariot, the apostle that betrayed Jesus. Some biblical scholars believe that Eve tempted Adam with the forbidden fruit on a Friday as well.

Given the widespread paranoia, it is not surprising that many people avoid getting aboard airplanes or making big purchases on Friday the 13th. As a result, American businesses lose between $800 - $900 million USD every time the 13th falls on a Friday.

In January and February of 2016, a total of 13 young sperm whales washed up on the beach near the town of Tönning in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany.

Among the man-made trash mistakenly ingested by the young whales was the remains of a 13-meter long and 1.2-meter wide safety net used for shrimp fishing.

The scientists also found a 70-centimeter-long plastic cover from a car engine and some sharp-edged pieces from a plastic bucket.

While that is certainly sad, what is worse is the amount of plastic the scientists discovered inside the mammals’ stomachs.

Ursula Siebert, head of the Institute for Terrestrial and Aquatic Wildlife Research at the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover, whose team examined the sperm whales, says, "If the whales had survived, the garbage in their guts might have caused digestive problems down the line." Also, as the whales eat more trash, it may give them the false comfort of being full and reduce their desire to feed, resulting in malnutrition.

As pieces of the man-made material get stuck in the animal's digestive tract, they result in a buildup of gas causing what scientists refer to as "floater syndrome." As the name indicates, it means that the turtles can no longer dive deep into the ocean to seek food.

According to researchers from the University of Queensland, in the past six to seven years, the number of marine life species ingesting or getting entangled in plastic has increased almost threefold, from 250 to 700.

Dr. Qamar Schuyler from the UQ School of Biological Sciences says: “Unfortunately, what this means is that if the bottom of the food chain is eating plastic, it bio-accumulates up the food chain, and there have been several studies that have looked at food fish – fish that we go out, and purchase – and even these fish have plastics in their intestines.”

If the possibility of consuming seafood filled with plastic does not serve a wake-up call to change our careless habits, we don't know what will!

Americans Expect To Spend Over $21 Billion On Mother's Day

Little did we know that Americans would comply with his wishes by transforming Mother’s Day into the third biggest consumer spending event of the year — Right after winter holidays and back to school/college season.

In 1907, Anna Jarvis began a campaign to convince lawmakers to designate a special day to honor America's mothers.

However, it was not until 1914 that Woodrow Wilson finally managed to persuade the U.S.Congress to set aside the second Sunday of May to honor moms.

So what do we spend all this money on? According to a survey conducted by the National Retail Foundation (NRF), a bulk of it will be on jewelry ($4.2 billion) and dinner, brunch or other outings ($4.1 billion)

Not sure what to get mom? A recent survey by Offers.com revealed that mothers cherish gifts that are personal. A handmade card or photo of a special memory you shared with her will do the trick

Seven-Year-Old Anaya Ellick Proves "Disability Is Not Inability

To win a national award for handwriting, especially in this digital age, is an achievement in itself. But what makes Anaya Ellick’s accolade extra special is that the seven-year-old accomplished the feat despite having no hands. Even more amazing? The first-grader from Chesapeake, Virginia, who won the prestigious Nicholas Maxim Special Award for Excellence in Manuscript Penmanship, on April 11, does not use prosthetics.

While the impeccable handwriting may surprise the world, Tracy Cox, principal of Greenbrier Christian Academy where Anaya goes to school, is not. In fact, it was Cox who entered the 1st grader in the annual national handwriting competition organized by educational company Zaner-Bloser. Contest director Kathleen Wright said the judges, many of who are occupational therapists, were "just stunned" by the quality of Anaya's printing. The young girl who competed in the category for students with special needs had to outshine 50 contestants to win the award.

The award which comes with a Zaner-Bloser gift certificate for Greenbrier Christian Academy and $1,000 USD cash prize and trophy for Anaya, is named after Nicholas Maxim, a fifth grader from Readfield, Maine. In 2011, the young boy who is born without his lower arms, submitted a cursive entry so impressive that Zaner-Bloser decided to create a new category to honor physically challenged kids.

Anaya’s proud parents, Bianca Middleton and Gary Ellick say the young girl’s determination and desire to be independent became apparent when she was just an infant. Though Anaya was fitted with prosthetic arms for a short time, the young girl decided she was better off with her natural ones and discarded them.

My brainy Learning Goal

                                     
For this weeks goal is to organise myself to be ready to learn. I know when I need to take  a break from my learning. So for this week I am going to try to go to sleep early so I get enough energy for school, take enough brakes so I don't get stressed and to keep my brain working and to eat a variety vegetables so I learn better.

My Goal Reflection

For this weeks goal is to do the right learning in the right space for me doing this was very easy because I already did that. And the spaces I used was The art space, meeting space, collaborative space and quiet space.

Mothers Day High Tea

On Friday at our school we had a celebration for all the mothers, also known as Mothers day high tea.  For the high tea all the classes did something special like making the class look pretty or making fancy food etc.

For our class (Marama) we made the classroom look pretty and we made food and tea tables. We also made a photo booth where kids could take a picture with their mum or grandmother and then finally a quiz where you could win a box of chocolates.

For the High tea I invited my mum and grandmother, I  made them tea and coffee then we played snakes and ladders while doing the quiz. And guess what? We WON THE QUIZ YAY!!!!!!! Then we had a picture at the photo booth and went home

Learner Agency

Something I do well is celebrating my failures and successes. This makes an impact on people because it helps them not feel sad or annoyed or angry it shows you that, YAY I FAILED!! now I can learn from my mistake!

Something I need to focus on to be an agentic learner is to ask for help because I feel embarrassed that I don't know what to do because I'm scared of what people will think of me.
